Toledo, Ohio’s television news station WTOL-11 knew its newsroom was in need of a modernization upgrade. They called on the Rudolph Libbe Group to handle the renovation, which was completed “on-time and on-budget with no disruption to news operations,” according to Brian Lorenzen, President & General Manager of WTOL-11.

The renovation was completed through a combination of RLG’s small construction projects and facility management teams with self-perform services including:

  • project management
  • general contracting
  • carpentry
  • general trades
  • demo work
  • electrical installation

One of the innovative changes made to the newsroom was the installation of underfloor electrical/data boxes for the open office workstations. This upgrade allows the staff to customize their workstations according to their individual needs, creating a more personalized and efficient work environment. New light fixtures, switches, and duplexes were also installed in the newsroom, the green room, and the adjacent offices, providing an overall brighter and more modern look to the space.

The design for the newsroom not only focused on aesthetics but also functionality. Receptacles were installed in the ceiling, making it easier for WTOL to add studio lighting when using the newsroom for live TV broadcasts. The newsroom can quickly adapt to any filming requirement and enhance the quality of its productions.

“I’m amazed at RLG’s ability to complete this project on-time and on-budget with no disruption to news operations!”

RLG’s approach to the renovation project included consideration of WTOL’s daily operations. The station produces 55 hours of news each week. The team worked around on-air hours to ensure that the renovation would not affect the news production schedule. The result was a seamless transformation that did not disrupt the station’s critical work.

The new and improved newsroom was unveiled at a ribbon-cutting grand opening, and was attended by several notable guests, including Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur and Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz.

Because RLG offers construction and facility management services, this project was easily managed, and WTOL had  the convenience of having just one point of contact for every aspect of the renovation.
