When Marathon Petroleum’s corporate headquarters building required a chiller replacement, the facility manager turned to long-time partner GEM Inc. for assistance. Using our 3D laser scanning system allowed quick and precise scans of existing conditions, creating a point cloud that was used to plan the project. Being able to accurately model new piping and equipment in a 3D environment with existing conditions expedited the timeframe of an already tight project schedule. Using laser scanning technology and modeling, Marathon’s chiller and corresponding piping were installed and commissioned faster than traditional construction practices.

Difficult field layout was avoided allowing work to progress while the design and prefabrication were taking place. Many of the field labor hours were used in GEM’s in-house fabrication shop which kept the number of people working in Marathon’s small mechanical building to a minimum.
